John chambers
John has racked up over 90,000nm since he began sailing at the age of six when he started crewing for his grandfather across the Solent, to the Channel Islands and France. Following in his footsteps, as his grandfather believed in pushing young people and giving them responsibility, which ignited his passion for sailing.
He has a strong background in offshore coaching and has made four Atlantic crossings with one of them including a sail up the Amazon River on a 34ft Contessa. “Surviving those dangerous waters and heading straight into a tropical storm pushed me to the limit. After 44 hours, it was certainly a relief to start pulling away from the jaws of the Brazilian mangroves”. Has also sailed 7,600nm across the North Pacific and was the 1st mate on Imagine your Korea in 2019-20 round the world Clipper Race.
“Sailing started as adventure training with Grandpa, it has now taken me to the far corners of our planet. Sharing epic voyages and experiences with the crew is what it’s all about!”
John has led voyages with Ocean Sailing Expeditions out of New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific Islands. “The south seas have been rugged and beautiful. Expeditions across oceans, reefs and islands certainly keeps us on our toes. It’s often the exploration off the boat which makes our experiences so memorable, and having that actively encouraged is rare to find.”
