Departing from Opua, nestled in the Bay of Islands, we begin our journey north into open ocean, leaving the rolling green hills of New Zealand behind as we head into the vast blue of the South Pacific. Over the following days, we cruise towards the remote and rarely visited Minerva Reefs—an atoll oasis surrounded by deep ocean, renowned for its turquoise lagoons, spectacular coral reefs, and thriving marine life.

Here, you’ll have the chance to swim, snorkel, and relax in a place few have ever set foot—or fin. The stillness, clarity, and remoteness of the Minerva Reefs create an extraordinary experience that feels like sailing into another world.

From Minerva, we continue on toward Fiji, crossing open waters and witnessing the dramatic shift from oceanic isolation to tropical island vibrancy. As we arrive at Vuda Marina, you’ll be greeted by the warmth of Fijian culture, lush surroundings, and the satisfaction of completing a remarkable ocean voyage.

This passage offers the perfect blend of comfort, exploration, and adventure—ideal for travellers who crave serenity, discovery, and connection to the sea.

Expedition overview

Departing from the picturesque harbour of Opua in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands, our motor cruise aboard Sea Breeze III begins with a sense of quiet anticipation. As we head north into open ocean, the sheltered coastlines gradually fade into the horizon and the deep blues of the South Pacific take centre stage. With steady cruising and round-the-clock care from our professional crew, you’ll ease into the rhythm of ocean life—sunrises over the bow, starry skies above, and the soothing pulse of the sea beneath.

After several days at sea, we arrive at one of the most remote and breathtaking locations in the South Pacific: the Minerva Reefs. These circular coral atolls, surrounded by thousands of miles of open ocean, offer a surreal and unforgettable experience. The lagoons are calm and crystal-clear, perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, snorkelling, or simply relaxing in utter seclusion. With no land in sight and vibrant coral gardens just beneath the surface, it’s a true oceanic sanctuary—untouched, uninhabited, and utterly serene.

While at anchor in North or South Minerva Reef (weather dependent), you’ll have time to explore the reef edges, spot tropical fish, rays, and reef sharks, or marvel at the sheer isolation of this mid-ocean anchorage. For many, this is the highlight of the passage—a rare opportunity to pause in one of the Pacific’s most elusive and pristine locations.

From Minerva, we continue our passage north-west toward Fiji, transitioning from raw ocean wilderness to the welcoming warmth of the islands. As we draw closer to the Fijian archipelago, the colour of the water changes, the air grows softer and warmer, and the scent of tropical land drifts in on the breeze. Dolphins often ride the bow, and flying fish scatter across the water’s surface as we approach our destination.

Finally, we make landfall at Vuda Marina, a peaceful and beautifully maintained port near Nadi on Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu. Here, you’ll be welcomed by palm-lined jetties, smiling faces, and the vibrant culture of the South Pacific. Enjoy a celebratory drink, stretch your legs on solid ground, and reflect on the unforgettable adventure you’ve just completed.

The guest suites and stateroom are situated on Sea Breeze III’s lower level and include 9 berths in total. The prices vary based on cabin size and berths per cabin.

• Aotea is our stateroom and it includes a king sized bed, private ensuite, sofa and TV and is designed for a single person or couple.

• The Waikawa and Kiwitahi suites can be configured as twin share, triple share and quad share (Kiwitahi only). The Waikawa and Kiwitahi Suites have had a 3rd fold-up bunk berth installed in each cabin, above the centre berth. It means the berth can be folded up vertically, when not in use, so that it does not impact on head room and cabin space when not in use. Kiwitahi also has a 4th removable bunk that can be fitted on request. This makes these cabins suitable for couples, 3-4 friends and families of 3-4. Both cabins have private ensuites.
